Après Julietta en début d’année, c’est au tour de Dario Zenker de répondre présent à notre invitation pour ce nouvel épisode des « Mix & Talk J&H ». Egalement membre de la famille Harry Klein, le célèbre club munichois, Dario a en quelques années à peine su s’affirmer comme une valeur sure de la scène techno allemande. Avec des releases sur des labels allant de Vakant, à Time to express (label de Peter Van Hoesen), en passant par Esperanza, Telegraph, ou encore Baud, ce fils de clubeur, et frère d’un autre Zenker tout aussi dangereux – Marco – avec qui il a fondé le label Ilian Tape, n’a pas fini de faire résonner la famille Harry Klein au delà de Munich. Le dernier vinyle que tu es acheté ?
Revenons rapidement à tes débuts. On peut lire dans ta bio que c’est Shake Shakir qui t’aurait donné ton premier skeud, est-ce vrai ?
Pour ce qui est du « premier », non ! Par contre pour le reste oui ! Je l’ai rencontré à l’appartement de mon Père après un gig au Club Ultraschall à Munich. Il écoutait l’album des Beatles au casque extrêmement fort. C’était tôt le matin, et pour ma part je rentrais d’une soirée Psytrance. Nous avons commencé à parler et comme j’étais très intéressé par toute les nouveautés, il m’a gracieusement donné un EP d’Akufen – Mary Jane Kelley sortie sur le label Revolver Canada. Comme je te l’ai dis, ce n’était pas mon premier vinyle, mais pour l’époque (Ndlr : dans les années 2000), cela représenté une direction totalement inconnue pour moi.
Comment cela c’est ensuite enchaîné ? Tu te souviens par exemple de ton premier set en club ?
Oh que oui ! Je devais avoir entre 16 et 17 ans… Ce qui signifie que je n’avais pas encore l’âge légal pour pouvoir y rentrer ! C’était un mercredi soir, et j’étais nerveux comme pas possible. Heureusement tout c’est très bien passé. Jouer sur un gros soundsystem pour la première fois reste un moment spécial !
Tu es aujourd’hui résident du Harry Klein à Munich. Agence de booking, club, label mais surtout une grande famille. Comment as-tu rejoins le crew ?
J’y ai joué pour la première fois en 2004, les choses se sont ensuite passées tout naturellement.
Alors dis-moi, imaginons que je veuille rejoindre l’équipage. Vous acceptez les cousins par alliance ? Que faut-il pour pouvoir intégrer la mafia Harry Klein ?
Bien entendu tu peux ! Tu dois simplement être toi même, et vivre ta passion à fond ! Ensuite c’est assez simple. Ah et bien sur, il faut que tu présentes bien, et que tu sois riche avec plein de bagnoles des apparts et toute cette merde… ;)
Mis à part Harry Klein tu gères ton propre label Ilian Tape avec ton frère Marko… Ca se passe bien ?
Nous sommes trois en fait, avec notre king du design « Andreas M ». Pour le moment tout se passe bien, c’est une excellente aventure.
Comment choisissez-vous vos prochaines sorties ?
Il faut que la musique soit de très bonne qualité, bien entendu ! Mais ce n’est pas tout, l’aspect humain est aussi primordiale… Tout est une question de feeling.
En tant que producteur, tu es capable de sortir des tracks à la fois groovy et mental. Trouves-tu que cela est une définition exacte de ton style ? Et quel est ton processus de création classique ?
Je ne suis pas sur d’avoir vraiment mon propre style. Je veux dire, purement sonore oui. Mais j’aime beaucoup changer d’environnement, de vibes… Tout dépend en effet du moment. Je ne planifie pas mes morceaux, tout est toujours issu de session freestyle que j’enregistre. Je reviens ensuite dessus quelques jours plus tard et vois s’il y a quelque chose d’exploitable !
Quel est ton actu pour les mois à venir ?
J’espère avoir quelques semaines de vacance en rab ! Sinon Ilian Tape 15 et Harry Klein 07 par Marco et Regen sont en route… C’est déjà pas mal pour ce mois-ci !
En dehors de la musique, il paraîtrait que tu es un grand amateur de cuisine… On t’a donc concocté une mini interview « spécialité culinaire », à toi de répondre à chacun des mots suivants par le plat que celui-ci t’évoque.

Le mix a était enregistré live dans mon studio avec deux platines vinyles 1210. Il regroupe quelques uns de mes morceaux favoris du moment… Autant dire qu’en ce moment ce n’est pas ce qu’il manque !

What is the last record you have bought :
To go back a bit on your trajectory as a Techno artist, I read you received your first techno vinyl by Shake Shakir… Can you tell us how that happened? Do you remember what Ep it was?
I met him at my Dad’s flat after his gig at the Ultraschall Club in Munich. He was listening to a Beatles record on the Headphones extremely loud. It was early in the morning i think and i just came back home from a Psytrance Club. We started to talk and he just gave me this record, as i was very interested in everything new. The record was actually Akufen – Mary Jane Kelley on Revolver Canada. That was 2000. But it was not my first Techno record as i got a lot of Disko B Techno records before. That was just one of the key records, as Akufen was something totally different back then for me.
Do you then remember your first appearence as a DJ? How was it?
Yes i actually do. I was 16 or 17 and not even allowed to be in the club. It was a wednesday party and i was nervous as hell, but it went great from all i can remember. To play on a big sound system for the first time is always special.
Your resident of the Harry Klein in Munich, a club, booking agency, label, but also a big family that smell happiness and passion. How have you join the crew?
I played at Harry Klein in 2004 or 2005 for the first time and it just went a very natural way.
Let’s think i’m a young kid living in munchen, techno heads, is there any chance I enter the family :)?
Of course. You just have to be how you are and you have to live what you do. Then It’s quite easy. And of course you have to look good and you have to be very rich with lot’s of cars and own flats and all that shit (:-)
You’re also boss of the IIian tape label, that you launched just one year after releasing your first EP. How is the label running?
I am not the Boss, my brother Marco and me are running the Label together with our Designking Andreas M. The label is running great, we are totally relaxed about everything as we just love to do what we do.
How do you choose new artists?
Of course the music has to be high quality, but the human aspect is very important too. We have some artists we never met yet, but through any communication you mostly can get a good picture about who you are working with.
As a producer i really like the way you combine groove and mental feeling. Is it for you a good definition of your style?
Well i am not sure about if i have a certain style doing music. Soundwise maybe yeah, but i am into a wide range of music and styles. It always depends on my mood and what happens around me in that moment, and as It’s always improvised and mostly recorded live. I just sit down and see what happens.
What can we expect in the month to come?
I hope some more late summer! Ilian Tape 15 and Harry Klein Records 007 from Marco and Regen are on the way, and that’s enough for this month.

The mix was recorded live in my Studio with 2 Technics 1210 and Vinyl only. It’s including some of my favorite records at the moment, and i have to say that there is so much amazing music out there right now. Thanks to you all for that!
