Sunday 21st, we get up way before sunset. We leave from the little airport of Asheville. 20 minutes from home. The ground personnel comments on the fact that they had two planes "at the same time", barely 2 minutes apart. Uncommon for an airport this size. We smile. We go by Charlotte and then cross the USA. The land is covered with snow in many places. It's only as we arrive in California that the sound looks green.
At the airport we quickly find some of the cruise staff. They're here to show us the bus provided by the company (additional fees of course. We laugh a lot with Hubby of Mr. Arlo who talks non stop and bosses everyone around with his funny accent. The staff also takes our luggage that we won't see again until the evening in our cabin.
We won't see much of Los Angeles, our only regret. Far in the distance the Hollywood sign on its hill, palm trees, houses... It's mainly the harbor we see. Impressive.
It's not even noon yet and we're boarding via the gateway. Check in took place in a building on the docks. That's where they checked I.D., passports and took the credit cards. They then give a key to each person. The key serves as an I.D., a key and a credit card during the cruise. Just before we enter the boat they take a picture of each of us that will be linked to our magnetic key.
Après le repas nous ressayons les cabines. Pas de chance, ca ne fonctionne toujours pas. Il parait que le problème est sur plusieurs ponts. Le personnel nous ouvre et nous découvrons nos quartiers pour la semaine.
We explore the ship from top to bottom, around 1pm at last the cabins are supposed to be ready. We find Hubby's family waiting on our floor. Happy meet-up. Sadly as we insert the keys in our door nothing happens. No door on our deck open. We decide to go eat at the Windjammer Cafe, a buffet restaurant already accessible. His step-sister: Pua and he family will meet us there too.
After lunch we try the cabins again. No luck it's still not working. It seems to be an issue on many floors/decks. The staff opens our door and we discover our quarters for the next week.
The bathroom isn't very big. But the most interesting is the water, smell and taste are borderline drinkable even though the company says it's safe to drink. So we will have to order bottled water, at high prices of course.
When a staff member brings Hubby suitcase he also tells us we have to go get our keys redone at the customer service desk. Oh what a joy when we see the line. It will take us 45 minutes to get to the desk. We end up missing almost all of the emergency drill, which in fact took place without the life jackets, passengers having no access to their cabins.
At last we leave, we admire the view from the balcony, as well as the people waving us goodbyes from the harbor's restaurants.
In the evening we go to the welcome party in the amphitheater, we laugh a lot between the Cruise Director's jokes, the juggler and especially the comedian.
The whole thing was followed with our first meal in the classy restaurant of the boat. We really enjoyed it. And to finish it all we went to the parade on the boat's "promenade".
If I was impressed by the boat, the feeling of having to pay a lot for all the extras: water bottle, alcoholic drinks at ridiculously high prices even the "offered" one at the entrance of the restaurant, some sports activities have fees, etc. (and all that after paying $50 to get our luggage in the plane) really made me feel uneasy, it will ake hours for me to relax and think about something else.
