To celebrate my birthday we went to a mexican-californian restaurant called Lemones. We had been there before but had only had time to have apetizers at the time.In July we celebrated both our anniversary and my birthday. I mentionned it when I made the reservation and they offered us a table by the window. It gave a good first impression. If the window section looks nice from the outside, I found it a lot less charming from the inside. I felt like I was in an aquarium. The service was average and there was no more notice of our celebrations. Knowing that most restaurants offer a free dessert or at least write "happy anniversary" on the plate, I found the lack of effort dissapointing to say the least.
Thankfully most of the food is good and the margaritas an excellent way to start the meal.I absolutely loved the Lobster Nachos that I started my meal with. There wasn't a lot of lobster in it, but it's mainly the flavors and textures that hit me. The serving was generous and it was easy to share with Hubby. I could have easily made my meal out of it.
Hubby order the empanadas stuffed with peppers and goat cheese. Just as flavorful, although a smaller serving. The plate also caught my attention for its colorful presentation.
I was dissapointed by my main dish. I don't know why but lately I seem to pick main courses that are not up to my expectations. Next time I might let Hubby pick for me...I ordered the shrimp skewers over israeli couscous servec with a watermelon-arugula salad. The salad was great but the shrimp lacked flavor. For a mexican inspired restaurant I had expected spices, a unique tatste... no it just tasted of shrimp... I could have done better at home.
Thankfully Hubby's dish was far more to par. He picked the Chile Rellenos. A pepper stuffed with three cheeses, served with ratatouille and salsa. Again a surprising mix of flavors, I couldn't help myself from stealing from his plate which got me the comment: "You wouldn't happen to be a 28 years old runner wouldn't you?"
For dessert we picked the chocolate mousee cake, we were attracted by the mention of a spicy blackberry sauce that came with it. Frankly I wish I had thought about it at the time and requested more of the sauce, because all we had was a few dots decorating the plate but doing little flavorwise. The chocolate was good but we could have found that anywhere.
Si vous êtes décus par un restaurant, vous le faites savoir ou vous partez et ne revenez pas?
As I said in the beggining, the service was average, we barely saw our waitress. For a meal that bordered $100 for two and when celebrating two occasions I have to say that three good dishes were not enough. If we go back to Lemones I think I'll make my meal out of apetizers as they were far more interesting. The other lesson is that I need to remember this is the US of A and I shouldn't hesistate to speak up, I didn't push it because it was my birthday. But I should remember that Hubby isn't the kind to complain. Next time I'll ask for 1)more sauce 2)remind that we are celebrating a special ocsion and 3)talk to a manager if needed (I almost did).
If you are disapointed by a restaurant, do you speak up? Or do you leave and don't come back?
