Entre gros traits, perspectives bancales, personnages grossiers ou cyclopes chelous aux muscles extravagants sa pattes pourrait être celle d’un crackhead sous meth dans un bordel glauque de Baltimore, sauf que il habite Berlin, c’est son taf, et les couleurs qui dépassent beh en fait c’est fait exprès ! Rencontre avec ce jeune talent straight from the east… On ne pouvait pas rêver mieux pour débuter 2012 !

Between big lines, wonky perspectives, unrefined characters or weird Cyclops with mutant muscles his touch could be the one of a crackhead under meth in a glaucous whorehouse of Baltimore… Except he lives in Berlin, it’s his job, and the colors which overtake are deliberate! Peux-tu rapidement nous présenter ton parcours ?
J’ai 27 ans et ça fait 3 ans que j’étudie l’illustration à l’université des arts de Berlin (UdK)
Can you quickly introduce yourself ?
i am 27 and study since 3 years illustration at the berlin university of the arts (UdK).
Quand et comment as tu débuté dans l’illustration ?
Je ne sais plus vraiment comment tout a commencé, mais j’imagine que le fait que mon père soit un artiste y est pour beaucoup. De mon côté j’ai commencé à skater en 1997, et me suis laissé fortement inspirer par toute la culture qui va avec. On dessinait des animaux et des visages sur nos planches, et faisions beaucoup de graffiti. Jusqu’au jour où tu te retrouves à plus dessiner que skater… Alors tu postules dans une école d’art et passe ton temps à faire de l’illustration !
How and when did you began illustration ?
I don’t really know. I guess my father already had some kind of impact on me by being an artist. Then I began skateboarding in 1997 and was inspired by its subculture. I remember everybody was doing graffiti and we used to draw animals and faces on our griptapes, having a lot of fun. Until the day I began to draw more and more and skate less, so I applied at the UdK and started to occupy myself with illustration.
Parle nous de l’illustration que tu as faites pour nous sur le thème de Jekyll et hyde ?
L’illustration représente Mr Hyde prenant le dessus et tuant sir Danvers Carew, pendant que la femme d’intérieur regarde.
Tell us a little bit about the illustration you made for us on the theme Jekyll & Hyde ?
The illustration shows how mr. hyde kills sir danvers carew while the housemaid is watching.
Quel est le dernier projet auquel tu as participé ?
Une Expo / Vente de groupe au Off center de Leipzig. Ca fait parti d’une série de 3 événements indépendants que nous organisons chaque année à Desden, Berlin et donc Leipzig, afin d’y présenter nos derniers travaux, fanzines, et sérigraphies.
What was the last project you participate in ?
A SELLOUT group exhibition project in the Off center in Leipzig. (october)
This is a yearly exhibition project that we make in Leipzig, Dresden and Berlin to sell our screen prints, fanzines, originals and so on.
Tu as un style très fanzine / sérigraphie à l’ancienne – dans le délire art brut, trash – et pourtant à côté de ça tu t’es retrouvé à faire des dessins dans Le Monde par exemple. Tu leur as dis quoi au téléphone pour qu’ils choisissent ton illustration ?
Je leur ai simplement envoyé mon travail en leur demandant si ça les intéressés… Et il se trouve que oui.
Your style, which is very fanzine / silk print inspired with this art brut look could appear really trash / underground, but nevertheless you achieved to work with clients such as Le Monde or The times, concerving your « coup de main ». So my question what did you tell them on the phone to got the illustration choosen :) ?
As for the le monde: i just send them my work and asked them if they’re interested and they were. And the times wasn’t a client, only a fictional work for university. Sorry for the confusion.
Penses-tu que les rédac chefs / PDG, sont plus sensibles aux approches artistique aujourd’hui ?
Par rapport à quand ? Je ne pense pas que quelque chose ai changé. Le patronat a toujours était sensible à l’art… ou pas ?
Do you think CIO / chiefs editors / executives, are more sensible to artistics approches today ?
In comparison to when? I don’t think that has changed. CIO’s have always been sensible to artistic approaches, or not ?
Imaginons que tu aies été choisi comme le redac chef de la première édition de 2012 du Monde et que tu doives désigner une illustration pour la couv’, qu’aurais-tu choisi ?

J’aime les travaux de Paul Paetzel, Marc Hennes et aussi Matti Gajek.
Can you tell us who are is the hot guys concerning illustration / graphism in town right now ?
I love the work of Paul Paetzel, Marc Hennes and Matti Gajek.
Peux-tu nous parler du thème de ton dernier fanzine Jupp ?
Il n’y a pas de thème, il s’agit simplement d’un recueil de mes derniers dessins personnels. Jupp part justement du fait que j’en avais marre de faire des travaux sur un thème précis. Il me fallait donc quelque chose de décousu, brut, sans ligne directrice particulière, un fanzine totalement libre.
I’m a bit confused with your last fanzine Jupp can you tell us what is about ?
After working in class with given topics all the time I felt the urge to do something completely free. Jupp is what came out and includes just random drawings that didn’t have any kind of topic or something like that. It is a fanzine that emerged out of pure desire to draw freely.
Tu as une palette de couleur très spéciale, bien à toi, d’où te vient-elle ?
Je n’en ai aucune idée ! Ca sort comme ça vient, peux-être est-ce ce que je vois dans le ciel, ici à Berlin… J’essaie simplement plein de combinaisons jusqu’à que ça me plaise !
You use a very particular color range, where does this come from ?
I don’t know where they come from. Maybe it’s heaven. I just try and play around until I find something i like.
Tu participes également à la DA du label Uncanny Valley de Dresden, d’où vous connaissez-vous ?
Je les connais car je suis moi-même originaire de Dresden, et que la scène là bas n’étant pas très grande tout le monde connaît tout le monde. Cependant c’est un pote qui leur a parlé de mon taf, ils ont kiffé, et m’ont donc demandé de faire leur première cover. Aujourd’hui nous en sommes à quatre et beaucoup de bonnes teufs !
You’re also implicated in electronic music scene ( which is btw the way we discovered your work), as you participated to the design of the first release of dresden’s label Uncanny Valley, do you know the guys ?
I knew them before, because Dresden (where I come from) is kind of small and people tend to know each other.
But in the end it was a friend of mine who told the Uncanny Guys about my work and so it happened that they asked me to make their first cover.
By now i have made four covers for them and we had lots of good parties.
