Cela va bientôt faire vingt ans que Andy Vaz arpente la planète techno. L’homme derrière quatre labels, dont l’excellent Background records, A touch of Class, et plus récemment Yore, qu’il dirige depuis son fief de la bouillante Cologne, n’a de cesse de surprendre par sa constance.
Regardons un instant dans le rétroviseur. Nous sommes en 98 lorsque Andy lance son label Background Records avec en premier invité un certain Terrence Dixon… Rien que ça ! En effet, alors que ses compatriotes allemands gardent l’oeil rivé sur la scène locale, Andy prend l’avion pour se rendre à la source du mouvement Minimal : Détroit. S’en suivra des collaborations avec d’autres artistes US tels que Rick Wade, Alton Miller et plus récemment Deadbeat.
Ayant depuis lâché les reines de Background, fatigué de voir un mouvement si pure souillé par des productions médiocres, Andy gère depuis 2007 Yore, plus focus sur le côté Deep, et chicago de la house music. Une veine qui semble l’inspirer puisqu’il vient de sortir un EP sur Delsin, et nous prépare une petite surprise sur un certain « Chiwax » pour la fin de l’été.

Entre ta récente sortie sur Delsin, ton apparition sur le label AVA. de Damiano Von Erckert, ainsi qu’un EP en préparation pour Chiwax, 2012 semble sonner comme le retour furieux d’Andy Vaz. T’en avais marre de sortir de la musique pour les autres ?
En effet, j’imagine que l’on peut voir ça comme un retour… Mais il s’avère juste qu’en ce moment tout ça sort naturellement. Je produis, les tracks suivent, et les sorties aussi, alors tant que j’aurais cette productivité je continuerais.
D’ailleurs peux-tu nous dire comment cette collab avec Delsin c’est profilée ?
Je venais simplement de finir cette track avec les vocaux de Niko Marks, quand j’ai immédiatement pensé à Delsin pour la release. Pour moi ça rentré totalement dans leur catalogue. Et il s’avère que j’avais raison car ils l’ont adoré.
Et avec toutes ces sorties as-tu revu ton point de vu concernant les Dj sets ? ( à l’époque Andy disait à LWE ne pas aimé DJ, mais plutôt jouer live)
En effet depuis cette interview j’ai pas mal revu mon point de vue, et je préfère actuellement jouer en tant que DJ… Il y a tellement de bonne musique en ce moment !
Peux-tu nous parler de ta config ? Ta préparation avant un gig ?
Comme je joue sur Traktor scratch, avec des vinyles Time-codés, j’ai toujours ma collection avec moi. Pas la peine de trier et s’emmerder avec un bac à vinyles… Par contre ATTENTION, ce n’est pas parce que je joue digital que j’achète des MP3 ! Tous mes morceaux sont ripés par mes soins sur vinyle dans mon studio, et j’ai ainsi une belle et propre collection de fichier wav 16bit !
Quels sont tes plans pour les prochains mois ?

After your 2011 album on your own Yore imprint, the label hasn’t put anything out in 2012, Is it because you don’t have anymore space on your librairy to stock it ? More seriously, What’s next for the label ?
Up next is the new Tony Ollivierra (previously known as Ibex) – Absolution EP, Yore-029. It will be released in July.
You appeared to be very productive recently, participating on the various for AVA, releasing an EP on Delsin, and the forthcoming on CHIWAX, are you felling 2012 as a « Andy Vaz » furious coming back ? Or it’s just that releasing on Label that isn’t yours a wish after so many years being « your own boss » ?
Yes, i guess you can call it a return. It’s really been a extraordinary productive year / time in the studio as of lately and in the past year. It just feels natural at the moment and tracks keep flying out of me for whatever reason. So of course i’m going with the flow and will get those babies out to see the light of day, while productivity lasts.
How the collab with Delsin came out ?
When the music was ready and it all came out so smooth with Niko Marks lovely vocals on the hook, i just instantly thought of Delsin right there and then. To me it was clear, it would fit in well and i simply shoot it their way and gladly, they felt the same way.
In a not so old interview you said prefering playing live that DJ, is that still accurate ?
Actually, i prefer playing DJ gigs at this stage, so it sort of changed around.
If not, can you tell us what is your classic preparation before leaving for a gig (how many vinyl, selection…)
I play Traktor scratch, with Vinyl Controllers, so i am always prepared for every occasion as far as my on board collection goes.. Usually, i still go through some stuff that i haven’t played in a while and/or constantly buy new records, so i try to fit those in there as well. I don’t buy music digitally at all, nor do i play anything in mp3 format. I still collect vinyl and digitalize everything myself in the studio as nice clean 16BIT Wav file.
